This method also known as withdrawal method. This refers to the male removing his penis from the vagina of his wife before he ejaculates his semen into her. It was done in the early days to prevent pregnancy. 
In our era, condoms and various other medications are used to prevent pregnancy. However, there are many situations when a man does not have a condom or his spouse is not on the pill (or other medication to prevent pregnancy). Thus, he is allowed to practice coitus interrupts, but it requires his wife’s consent.
